Refreshing Home Design Tips for the Hot Summer Ahead

Now we’re officially entering the hot season, expect the stifling heat to make it even harder for you to consider slaving over a sizzling stove! But then again, people who live in 100-degree weather all year round do cook, don’t they? And the look on your little ones’ faces when they rush into your kitchen to see what smells so good – that’s certainly worth a bit of toiling, isn’t it?

AC isn’t your only resort at home this summer!

If you’re keen on having a cap on your upkeep costs, you may not even want to add that bit of hardware to your kitchen. As we’ve discovered from working with our more heat-adverse clients, there are a few tricks to keeping the mercury in our thermometers below flaming-hot level.

Home design 101: Shades go hand in hand with lights!

The go-to shield in scorching heat is, of course, curtaining it off from the sun. Outfitting your windows with dark curtains or blinds (or even vines on the outside!) will stave off the greenhouse effect indoors – not to mention, they can be just the accessory needed to round out the overall look of a room. Give under-cabinet lighting fixtures a thought as well, as a way to shine a light selectively through the kitchen, depending on the area you’re using.

Blue is the coolest home color!

While a warm aesthetic is usually sought after by homeowners who come to us for remodeling work, a cooler look is nothing to scoff at either. Studies have shown that our senses are connected and a lot of what we feel in our bodies can be traced back to what the colors that surround us trigger in our minds. In other words, go for an oceanic-toned, cool blue or green kitchen if you want it to lure you in even when you’re sweltering.

Organic in-home finishes aren’t on trend for nothing!

Brick is slow to absorb heat, so if you and high temps don’t mix, adding exposed brick to your home will make it feel cooler inside for longer. Invest in some marble countertops and glass shelves too, while you’re at it, as their cool touch and resistance to heat can help you score a decisive win against the heat.

Be savvy scattering chilly textiles around your home!

If you’re a pattern fanatic like some of us at dRemodeling, you’ll have a few throw pillows scattered throughout your kitchen – they really give it a unique touch of character, don’t they? I bet you didn’t know they can also help with the swelter! Buckwheat pillows are a great choice for anyone suffering from the heat, as the hulls within let the air pass more freely than other materials. If you can’t do without a throw rug, go with no-pile cotton over wool, which will also keep heat at bay.

In my opinion, Decorate your house with fresh flowers is one of the best ideas to refresh your home in summers.
Flower arrangements that are sure to bring energy to any room. Fresh flowers are an inexpensive and very easy way to eliminate water smells like rotten eggs at your home.
