Modern Rustic Home Décor - How to Get the Balance Right

While you may not be living on a ranch, and not even considering a rustic overhaul for your home decor, a little country flavor can do wonders if you’re aiming to add character to your dwelling. The style has been slowly spilling over into suburbia and even city homes, and at the rate we’re getting requests for rustic-style remodeling jobs, it’s here to stay. So, if you’re planning on letting your farm flag fly, low or high, in your home, here are a few design elements that we could fix you up with!

WOODEN ELEMENTS IN FULL VIEW

The one thing that absolutely screams country-cozy is, naturally, wood – the rawer, the better. To incorporate it into your home, we’d typically start off with exposed wooden beams and work from there. Typically, a wood-lined ceiling offset with chic, classy parquet flooring is what captures our clients’ fancy the most, seeing as any more wood can upset the modern-rustic balance.

OUTSTANDING STONE/BRICK

You can’t go wrong with in-your-face raw stone elements, like a stone-lined fireplace, or a stone-clad wall abutting a more inconspicuous (neutral tile) one in the bathroom. The addition of organic touches like these will counterintuitively warm up the place with thoughts of an ancestral homestead where grandma’s cooking would extend a good-hearted welcome to all.

EYE-CATCHING RUSTIC TILE DESIGN

Ceramic wall and/or floor tile, or even a single line of tiles skirting a fireplace are a real visual treat when rustic patterns are used to bring out the old-timey mood. Be careful about cutting too old a figure though, do balance the tile style out with more modern elements. As such, our recommendation is that neutral-toned tiles and walls be used elsewhere, to envelop and set out the colored patterns.

STYLE-DEFINING BARN DOORS

The barn door has been a sought-after stand-alone element for a few years now, in homes that don’t necessarily skew rustic at all. But it’s worth considering in a modern-rustic remodel all the more – aside from making a bold farm-style statement, the sliding barn door brings a very on-trend transitional look, at once traditional and modern.

PERFECTLY POISED MODERN FURNITURE

With these rustic transformations popping up all through your home, you’ll want to bring it down a notch with modern fixtures and fittings. The easiest way to do that is by weaving in metal trimmings and state-of-the-art appliances, or even pushing for an all-out contrasting industrial look – typically, in the kitchen or bathroom. Add an extra splash of modern with islands or countertops that  hard lines and corners.

FLOOR-TO-CEILING WINDOWS

Large windows that let in plenty of light and show off your backyard garden are a twofer you can’t afford to leave out of your remodeling plans. If you’re going rustic, there’s nothing that spells it out quite as well as an easy escape into nature – which is what floor-to-ceiling windows represent.
