What Did EuroCucina Teach Us about Kitchen Trends in 2016?

After this year’s Milan Design Week, the kitchens displayed at EuroCucina left us rubbing our hands in anticipation of a full year of kitchen remodeling projects where, at our clients' behest, we’ll love to implement and follow the ideas and trends introduced by some of the world’s top designers! So let’s review a few of the highlights from the kitchens on display at EuroCucina that will find their way into the kitchens of forward-thinking and aesthetically-minded homeowners this year!

1. Color pop – Kitchen à la française

The timeless beauty of La Cornue kitchens was decidedly anchored in the contemporary at this year’s EuroCucina, with their rage of color-splashed isles and stoves, and outlandish backsplashes that caught everyone’s eye. These custom-made kitchens would be the crown jewel of any home and add a pinch of joie du vivre to family get-togethers even before you turn on the stove! Landing on the right side of colorful without being too “busy,” that is the sweet spot of the color pop trend.

2. Industrial cold – Stone-clad kitchen ice-lands

The centerpiece imagined by Strasser’s designers for the kitchen is an isle that exudes the strength, durability and poise of Mother Nature. Cold vibes? Undoubtedly, but there’s also comfort and grace in the stone that was carved to such perfection. This type of precision carving blends well, conceptually, with the integrated storage innovations, like the dishwasher that pops out when you knock on the stony slab facade!

3. Organic warmth – Wood-clad kitchens

The unique gentle tones that only wood can bring to a modern, well-appointed kitchen are top on many designers’ minds this year. Hewn from nature and conjoined by man with smart tech or matching textures, the appeal of wood is everlasting. Most notably this year, organic, fossilized, reclaimed wood surfaces and solid blocks will come into their own – natural is in and paint is exiting the picture…

4. High-tech, high-cuisine – Smart kitchen countertops

The ingenious minds at Marmo Arredo released onto the Salone Del Mobile its most “viral” item yet – and that’s got nothing to do with germs! Their integrated sink that slides in and out of the countertop at the touch of a button made waves on the Internet. For an invisible sink, it was quite visible everywhere, overnight! And the bigger-scheme picture here is that maybe an app-controlled kitchen is indeed the future, along with other tech-enabled wonders from sliding cabinets to trapdoors wired to open on voice command! This sink alone pushes the ease/style quotient in the kitchen up a notch. Would you cook in a techie kitchen?

5. Now you see it… now you don’t! – Kitchen storage

The creative folks from Steininger riffed on the minimalist trend this year, playing it up to conceive of kitchen islands that wouldn’t look anything like our grandmother’s. The main focus for this particular trend is on concealed storage spaces, compartments that you conjure up from steel blocks like a modern-day Excalibur! Take note, the space-saving movement is gathering steam, even in upscale kitchens, not because we all mature into hoarders as years go by, but because creativity begets minimalism and vice versa - a yin and yang-type communion that lets our kitchens put their best foot forward!

6. Mix ‘n Match – Kitchen Aesthetics

As is obvious from this kitchen island designed by the French visionaries of La Cornue, the mixed metal trend isn’t going anywhere this year, with a wealth of combos to choose from. Not least of which, the rose-gold copper and charcoal steel pairing that gives this island a traditional, classy air. Together with the distinct knobs and peculiar railing, this sure is a winning look for transitional kitchens!
Last but not least, the mix ‘n match trend extends to kitchen compositions, as is evident in Comprex’ modular designs, which bring closed, minimalist cabinetry and open shelving together in the same breath.
