Changing Perceptions in a Master Bath

When you feel hemmed in by limited square footage, you tend to disregard what a remodeling job could do off-hand. Still, as we tell our clients again and again, a designer’s keen eye for potential tweaks can completely overhaul the look of any room. That's particularly true, like this 112-SF one we just finished bathroom renovation in Elkins Park that we're eager to tell you about.

Don’t be discouraged by small spaces!

This master bathroom started off looking crammed by a boxed-in shower and a single-pedestal sink whose unique purpose wasn’t really working within the available space. To get the sink in line, our designer Ashley McIntyre shook things up with a seven-drawer double vanity that meets two needs at once: as both wash station and storage area.

Shower trends nowadays skew toward open, walk-in setups, so the floor-to-ceiling shower wall that was needlessly taking the air out of the room as a separator screen was swiftly replaced by a half-height one. The space opened up by this change allowed for a shower bench and marble pie storage shelves, and still there’s enough room for two lovebirds to share!

Patterns will make or break a bathroom!

As we’ve said here before, tile patterns are the backbone of a bathroom and the uncoordinated floor and wall tiles in our clients’ bathroom instantly gave it a lackluster, outdated look. In order to turn that gloom into allure, Ashley coated the walls in clean white wainscoting that really sets out the beauty of the marble floors.

In case you haven’t guessed it from the photos, the shower really is the centerpiece here, and that’s not just due to the clever use of the space. The Calacatta Gold Marble subway tiles on the shower walls sparkle under the soft shine of the recessed lights above. And they complement the brushed nickel fixtures that set a beautiful luxury tone throughout the room.

The shower tiles really take your breath away on entering the bath – and the matching herringbone medallion ensconced in the middle focuses your attention like a cameo applique would on a precious gem. The shower floor tile choice shifts ever so slightly from the wall pattern, with a Calacatta hexagon mosaic – that’s in keeping with the rest, without being redundant, a nice touch of whimsy from Ashley!

Gold touches course through this master bath in such a gentle way that they never come off as over the top, but understated and noble – with the dimmable ceiling-mount fixture reflecting that regal shine to great effect.
